Thursday News

Happy Thursday!

We started with our Happy Camper interview and name book. We then transitioned to the reading area where we were introduced to a new text (Making Bridges). We learned that it was a poem and that poems often have words that rhyme. We then focused on the title and practiced asking questions as a reader. We wondered why the title was called Making Bridges, even though there wasn't a picture of a bridge at all - there was a picture of a boy and girl. After reading the poem, I asked if the kiddos had their question answered? After some conversation, we made the connection that the poem is about making a new friend and the things they learn about each other can connect them, just like a bridge connects places.

After whole group reading, we did our morning message, calendar, and Daily News routine. We then went outside for a glorious, sunny recess.

When we came inside, we went right into reading groups. The students worked on letter ID, sounds. main idea, handwriting, and listening.

We then transitioned into our writing time. We met at the carpet area to play the game "Fact or Opinion." Writing should be connected to text whenever possible, so we read Clifford's Halloween and gave our opinion whether or not we liked the book ("I liked the book because ______." OR "I didn't like the book because ______.").

After writing, we focused on our math concept - making 9 with hidden partners. The students are doing a beautiful job listening, problem solving, and using "math words" during our lessons!

The afternoon was filled with lunch, recess, library, another whole group reading lesson (focusing on the letters Pp, Qq, Rr, Ss, Tt), snack/show and share, quiet  time, and free choice centers.

Important Information:
1. Communication Folders are due tomorrow (10-6).

2. Tomorrow is our first Popcorn Friday. If you purchased a pass for your child, I have that information and you do not need to do anything. However, if you didn't purchase a pass and would like your child to have popcorn, please send in $1 with your child tomorrow. I anticipate that this could be hard for kiddos, so please clearly tell your child if they will be having popcorn tomorrow.
