We started our day with Happy Camper interviews, morning message, calendar, and Daily News.
We then watched a short introduction video for our first reading unit - Rules are Important. After outdoor recess, we went right into reading groups; where students worked on asking questions (focused on rules at school and in sports), letter ID, sounds, handwriting, and listening.
Once we were done with groups, we met at the reading area to review opinion writing and prepare for our first opinion write. We discussed which animal we liked better - dog or cat and then went back to our seats to actually write our opinion. The students did a beautiful job and were very focused. This is probably the most difficult write because it's the first. It takes a lot of mental energy and the students rocked it!
After writing, we did a brain break (Go Noodle) and then transitioned to math. We again identified hidden partners and the wording "plus" and "equals." This time, however, we were working with bigger numbers (up to ten). The students stayed so focused and worked very hard to solve different problems as a team!
During the afternoon, we read our big book (Play By the Rules) and the decodable (ABC). After whole group reading, we went to PE, had quiet time, snack, show and share, recess, and free choice centers.
