Our Targets for today were:

| We can read AND write sight words! |
We started our day with the January self portrait. It's so amazing to see the growth in their fine motor control and attention. They have come a long way! We then moved on to our message and calendar time. Specifically, we focused on the letters Cc and Nn, as well as the sight words have and to. We also spent some time learning about place value. After doing our Daily News, the students enjoyed in-door recess. Once recess was over, we moved on to reading group. During groups, the kiddos worked on sight words, initial sounds, best guess spelling, handwriting, and listening. During math, we worked as a team to weigh different objects - hoping to find two things with the same (equal) weight. The students LOVED this - I wish you could have heard their excitement! :) Lastly, we read a story from our anthology book. The story was called Soup Stone and the students were to listen for what the soldier does in the story. Basically, he is hungry and he uses a normal stone to convince a family to feed him. Before reading the story, we learned four new vocabulary words:
1. village - a rural area - smaller than a town
2. longingly - a strong desire
3. eyeing - looking at
4. ladle - a spoon with a long handle
For some reason, the students were VERY interested in what a ladle was. :) I drew a picture and talked about how I'm sure many of you have one at home. Almost every kiddo said they did not have a ladle at home, so I told them I'd let you know and you could show them. :)
Important Information:
1. There is not a homework packet to turn in tomorrow; however, please continue to focus on the December progress report items, as well as extension activities for your child. If your kiddo was gone right before break, I'm still working on their progress report and will get it to you asap.

3. Conferences are coming up - Feb. 15-17. Please note 2/15 is a half day for 1-5th grades; HOWEVER, our am and pm kinder schedule does not change. Also, 2/16 and 2/17 are NO SCHOOL DAYS.
4. We have PE tomorrow. Please make sure your child wears good running shoes (no boots).
