We had a great day together!
Our routine was a bit different today. We started with a math lesson all about capacity. We used beans and various sized containers to learn what capacity is and to explore the concept a bit. We then transitioned to morning message (focusing on the letter Rr, the /r/ sound, and our new sight words you and for). During calendar, we focused on counting, place value, and graphing. We then moved to Daily News. During this time, we not only practiced our new sight words, but we did a shared write together (paying close attention to what sentences need).
We were able to go outside for recess. The temperature felt great....it almost felt like spring! :)
After recess, we went right into reading groups. During groups students focused on letter sounds, sight words, blending, ABC books (Rr page), handwriting, and listening. We just recently started using iPads and the students are doing a great job. One app we are using quite a bit is called Teach Your Monster to Read. It's a wonderful app, if you'd like to check it out. The one other app we are using is a letter/number tracing app. This reinforces correct formation, as well as sounds of letters.
After reading groups, we did a quick math fluency activity (finding groups of six and then identifying the hidden partners). During writing we started our study of groundhogs in preparation for our next informational write.
The students are loving it and could not be more excited for Groundhogs Day (this Friday)! :)
Our afternoon was filled with lunch, recess, a royal reader, PE, snack, show and share, quiet time, and free choice centers.
