Monday News

We had a great day together!

We started with morning work, morning message (focusing on letters and sight word review), calendar, and Daily News. We went out for recess and then came in for reading groups. During reading groups, students focused on letter ID, sounds, sight words, annotating text, handwriting, and listening.

When groups were over, we met at the carpet and reviewed informational writing. I then read the book Show Me the Honey - an informational text about bees.
I then had the students turn and talk with a neighbor, sharing at least two new facts they learned about bees. After allowing everyone to share, students returned to their seats and I introduced them to the graphic organizer that we'll be using with informational writing. Tomorrow we will work together to fill out the organizer and write our first informational paper.

We did another science lesson in our new unit- Pushes and Pulls. The students worked collaboratively to determine which object (wooden block or paperclip) could cross the finish line? They could only use a straw to move both objects with their air.

The "crosscutting concept" question was:
Why do you think things moved in different ways even though everyone was using a straw?

The students were very thoughtful and shared that some people were holding their straws differently and were blowing harder/softer.

They loved the experiment time and we had a very involved discussion to wrap it all up. Tomorrow we will do our final lesson in this unit.

Our afternoon was filled with lunch, recess, snack, show and share, and free choice centers.
