We had a fantastic day!
We started our day with a Valentine project that will be sent home on Friday. :) Prepare yourself, it's cute! ;) We then did our daily Calendar and News routine. The kiddos were so excited because in only 8 days, it will be the 100th Day of Kindergarten!!! :) We introduced our new letter this week (Hh) and the /h/ sound with the Alpha Tales book (Hide And Seek Hippo), question can (it was a hand), and picture guess (all the pictures started with the /h/ sound). After the letter work, we went outside for a glorious, sunny recess. After recess, we continued our work with number bonds. The students did a wonderful job telling their number stories and working with the number bond. Finally, we ended our day with our second personal safety lesson. We started with reviewing the Eight Never-Never Rules and what to do if someone asks us to do one of these things.
Eight Never-Never Rules!
1) Never touch guns
2) Never play with fire
3) Never ride on wheels without a helmet
4) Never go in water without an adult watching
5) Never use a sharp tool without an adult
6) Never ride in a car without wearing a seatbelt
7) Never touch a dog without asking the person in charge
8) Never cross the street without checking all ways for traffic
If someone asks us to do one of these things:
1) We use our self talk and ask ourselves "Is it safe?"
2) If it isn't safe or we don't know, we refuse by saying in a strong voice "No, that's not safe."
3) Then, we go tell the adult in charge.
We then moved on to our new focus: The Always Ask First Rule.
Asking permission from the parent or person in charge protects students from dangerous situations and helps parents and caregivers know what students are doing. Most young students know they should not go anywhere with strangers, but it is important for them to ask for permission to go with someone they know, too, because most sexual abusers are someone the student knows.
If a students is asked to do something (even if they think it's safe), they always need to ask the adult in charge first! For example, if a family friend asks the child if they can play at the park, they reply, "I need to ask my parents first."
Important Information:
1. Homework folders came home today (2-8-16).
2. Take Home Books were exchanged/checked in today (2-8-16).
3. Please help your child make a Valentine box at home. Send their box and Valentine cards in to school on Friday, 2-12.
4. The 100th Day of school is February 19th. We will have a little celebration as a class and some fun 100th Day activities. There isn't an "official party," it's a normal school day with some extra fun thrown in. :)
5. Students need to fill their plastic 100 bag with 100 things and bring it back to school before 2/12. Items that work well are buttons, legos, small marshmallows, stickers, beads, etc. Please help your child as they count and fill their bags with their chosen item.
